Natural down treated with a water resistant coating. Each individual down plume is modified on the molecular level to create the hydrophobic finish, which still allows the down to be thermally insulating, even in wet conditions (one of the limitations of untreated down). This finish allows therefore allows the down to stay dry longer, loft better, and dry faster than untreated down. The hydrophobic chemical treatment is added during the usual processing of the down. It is supplied in approximately 10 kg (22 lb) bags. The down clusters can vary in size, but are typically less than 1 in (25.4 mm) in diameter and come in wither white or grey down. Grades of down can be customized to meet specific functions and/or feel and/or performance levels. The chemical applied to the down is bluesign® certified and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved. All components of the polymer used (including chemical manufacturing, finished chemical, and down processing) have been evaluated and rated as non-hazardous to human health, safety, and the environment. Applications include insulation inside apparel and sleeping bags.
