Using the idea of growing clothing from magnetic forces, they manipulated a material made from iron filings mixed with resin. The composite was then added to fabric and pulled by magnets to form irregular spiky shapes and patterns. Fractal patterns emerge as the material stretches.
The dresses are a development of Van der Wiel’s Gravity Stool, which was also created using magnets, although this new material is much softer to touch. Experiments were carried out to achieve optimal flexibility in structure and a dark pearlescent colour. Each garment took three weeks to produce.
