100% cellulosic, segmented hollow viscose (rayon) fiber which is collapsed in the dry state and swells when wet. This fiber is superior to cotton and standard viscose as it exhibits enhanced water absorption and high water retention against re-wetting, microclimate regulation and the dye pick up is approximately 3 times higher than standard viscose. The fiber is produced through a wet spinning process whereby the extruded filaments are solidified in a coagulation bath. The fiber can be converted into yarn for woven or knitted fabrics or processed with nonwoven and wetlaid technologies. The filaments are cut into staple fibers 1.6 – 2.4 in (40 and 60 mm) long, or wet short cut fibers: 0.1 – 0.5 in long (3 – 12 mm), or bundled as tow (untwisted continuous filaments). This fiber is naturally low in lustre and white in color with a linear density (decitex or dtex) 2.1, and 3.3 g/10,000 m. Other linear densities (dtex) or staple lengths are available upon request. This material can be blended with natural or synthetic fibers. This material has a tenacity of 12 – 16 cN/tex, 20 – 25 % elongation at break, a water retention capacity of 220 – 360% according to DIN 53814; is compostable according to DIN EN 13432:2000-12; and has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) (Mixed (Credit) STD-40-004), and the PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Chain of Custody ST 2001:2008: production and sale of viscose fibers according to the percentage method). Potential applications include textiles which require high absorbency such as wound dressings, feminine hygiene products, absorbent products, household and personal care wipes, and washable nonwovens.
