A polymer composite that blends recycled polypropylene (PP) and fine pine wood particles (wood flour) from lumber manufacturing waste. The combination of the two materials creates a material that is compatible with standard plastic manufacturing, while minimizing polymer usage and providing a unique “speckled” aesthetic. The wood particulate serves as both filler and structural reinforcement for the polymer. Additionally this material’s use of wood flour creates a new revenue stream for lumber mills and promotes the use of waste material. The 30% wood flour blend has a tensile strength of 3,600 psi (0.02 GPa) at yield, a tensile modulus of 399,000 psi (2.8 GPa), and notched impact strength of 0.43 ft-lb/in (23 J/m).The pellets are a light brown in color due to the natural coloration of the wood. The plastic component can be colored as desired, though the natural wood particulate will be visible on the surface. Resin is sold by the pound and can contain from 30 to 60% wood flour, which can be sourced form pine, maple, or oak lumber waste. Two grades are available, tuned for the processing requirements of injection molding and extrusion. Applications include, decking, furniture, structural components, toys, housewares, and consumer goods.
