Micro-beads of polyhydroxyalkanoates PHA that are a fully biodegradable alternative to synthetic micro-beads made from polyethylene PE), polypropylene PP and polytetrafluoroethylen,(PTFE). Synthetic beads are being withdrawn from personal care and ,cleaning products, as they pass through waste water treatment facilities pol\ut’ing b.,odies o,f water, whereas these bea ds are fully biodegradable in open m.arine environments. They are produced through a ferme ntation process in which ,micr,oorganisms are fed corn syrup that is converted into the biopolymer micro-beads directly ·inside the livi.ng cells. They are also heavier than traditio nal micro-beads, making it ea:sier to sepa·rate them out during water treatment processes. The particles are irregularly shaped and are mildly abrasive without the harsh feel of minerals or nutshells. Unlike other ·powders available in th e market, t·hese do not swell in water. This process is similar to the fermentation proces s to make beer, wine or sourdough bread. The microbe. ads are available in particle sizes ranging from 50-1100 μm (0.002-0.04 in). The natural col·or of the PHA is off-white. The micro-beads are available in a ra nge of particle sizes, chosen to suit the physical c 1h aracteris ti·cs required for specific applications. These PHA powders have be.en demonstrated to easily reach the required pass levels prescribed by ASTM D7081. It is Vinçotte and BPI certified to meet compostability standards. Applications include gentle exfoliants in personal care products such as shampoos, cosmetics and cleansers.
