Compostable, solution-dyed, anti-microbial PLA biopolymer yarn. The PLA (polylactic acid) polymer used for the production of the yarn is not made from oil derivatives, but is obtained from renewable agricultural resources. The PLA polymer is produced from dextrose (sugar) obtained from the processing of corn grown for other industrial applications. Sugar from corn, sugar beets, wheat or sugar cane can be used to yield the lactic acid. The anti-microbial effect is achieved through the release of silver ions incorporated into the fiber. The yarn is lightweight, has high tenacity, a low flammability percentage (LOI > 26%), a greater hygroscopicity (water resistance) compared to synthetic yarns and faster drying than natural fibers. It is available in a wide range of colors as POY (partially oriented yarn), FDY (fully drawn yarn), texturized, twisted and taslan yarn. Applications include bags, accessories, apparel, outerwear, upholstery and home textiles.
