Lumber that has been treated with silica to ‘mineralize’ the natural cells of the wood and create an impervious barrier. This treatment process for wood offers a less harmful alternative to many of the harsh chemicals typically used to protect lumber. Silicon is incorporated into the top surface of the wood along with organic catalysts, infiltrating the cells within a water-based solution under pressure. Through a chemical reaction and subsequent kiln drying, the silicon is converted to silica, a ceramic, and acts as a physical and chemical barrier. The treatment in this case is applied to Nordic pine, sustainably harvested softwood, making it hydrophobic and enabling it to be used for applications normally only suitable for slower growing hardwoods. The lumber can be used outdoors in harsh conditions including frost, rain and fire, with no loss in performance. The wood retains its blond hue. The lumber is offered in planks 22, 28, 34, 45, 70, 95 and 120 mm (0.87, 1.1, 1.34, 1.77, 2.76, 3.74 and 4.72 in) thick. It is Bfl-s1 compliant for fire retardance according to EN13501-1 and is class 1 for resistance to dry rot according to EN 113. The lumber is FSC, PEFC certified, and has passed various Swedish eco-requirements for healthy homes and nature conservation. It is used for construction of houses, as well as for decking, and poles and studs in buildings.
