Structural sheet material that is an alternative to engineered wood, made from agricultural waste and mycelium. It competes directly with dense and rigid materials like MDF (medium density fiberboard) that can contain toxic binders. This process has the ability to form shapes without CNC Milling or other forming processes. That means cheaper, more efficient production that achieves zero waste. It is structural, durable and has high screw hold strength. Crop wastes are inoculated with mycelium and grown under controlled conditions. Mycelium acts as a natural binder that glues the loose agricultural particles and fibers together. The material is then compressed with heat and pressure to further activate naturally occurring resins, into boards or molded shapes. No chemical resins are used. The material can be worked and finished in any way that traditional engineered wood products can be.
Custom sized sheets are available or it can be molded directly into a shape and can include detailed features or compound curves; thicknesses will vary. Customization of material properties and surface finishes are possible for high volume applications. The material is currently offered in a natural color. The material has a Class A flammability according to ASTM E84 as well as Cradle-to-Cradle® Gold certification. Applications include furniture components, sports equipment and architectural interiors.
